Coffee's still just a "handcuff" fantasy pick, but has earned an early-season role with an outstanding preseason. Over 16 weeks, the 17-carry per game estimate would result in 272 for Gore, or more than he's had since 2006. It should keep him fresh, and Gore will remain oft-used in the passing game.

The Niners are only calling it a routine sprain, but they need Gore at 100 percent even if he's begging to play through the injury. Gore was allowed to play injured last year, and wasn't the same for several weeks. Glen Coffee will be featured in the offense and should be grabbed in all leagues.

Citing a league source, La Canfora disputes the 49ers' assertion that Gore only has a routine sprain. The high ankle sprain is almost always a multiple-week injury, and the Niners will hope he can return after their Week 6 bye (meaning ultimately three games missed, including Week 3's one-carry effort). The Niners have wonderful matchups (vs. St. Louis, vs. Atlanta) coming up for Glen Coffee.

This gibes with earlier reports that Gore would miss 1-2 weeks with the injury. Since the Niners have a Week 6 bye, it's easy to picture Gore being sidelined until Week 7. Glen Coffee, who should top waiver wire lists, has nice matchups against the Rams and Falcons the next two weeks.

Niners are more optimistic than me on the high ankle sprain.
